Ryerson University will be hosting the ninth annual International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI) Conference in Toronto April 12-15. Organized by Ryerson’s renowned School of Fashion, the conference combines research presentations with guest speakers and special events. This year’s conference explores “Extreme Fashion,” pushing the boundaries of design, business and technology.

“As an international leader in fashion education, Ryerson is proud to welcome our fashion technology colleagues from around the world to Toronto,” said Linda Lewis, Chair, School of Fashion and IFFTI Board member. “Toronto is the fourth largest centre for design in North America and we are delighted to showcase fashion’s contribution to the various cultural institutions and activities that make up our city.”

“Hosting an international academic fashion conference is a fantastic opportunity for Ryerson University and our School of Fashion students,” said Daniel Doz, Dean, Faculty of Communication & Design. “As a cornerstone of fashion education, the IFFTI conference is a natural fit with Ryerson, where we offer an academically demanding program which focuses on fashion as an art, a business and an intellectual challenge.”

The research program of this year’s conference is comprised of 38 presentations from 21 international fashion schools, including the Fashion Institute of Technology, India’s National Institute of Fashion Technology, the London College of Fashion, l’Institut français de la mode and the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. Three professors from Ryerson University will present their research findings with studies on fashion history, fashion media, and consumer culture and street fashion.

On the events side, the IFFTI conference welcomes keynote speakers Dominique Lemieux (Costume Designer, Cirque du Soleil) and Jeanne Beker (Fashion Television, Fashion Quarterly and SIR Magazine), two well-respected fashion players from Canada. Also part of the program are the Bata Shoe Museum International Shoe Design Competition, featuring a panel of fashion and footwear experts from around the world, and the closing show of Mass Exodus, the annual fashion showcase of Ryerson fourth-year fashion designers’ collections. Toronto gets a chance to show off its fashion and design district with The Bay Queen Street Crawl. Beginning at the Bay with a look into the design process for the Canadian Olympic uniforms, the tour continues westward along a route of designer boutiques run by Ryerson School of Fashion alumni.

IFFTI is a global organization of fashion schools dedicated to the advancement of education, research and development in fashion design, technology, business and related industries. Last year’s IFFTI conference was held in Raleigh, North Carolina. The 2005 conference took place in Tokyo, Japan.

Ryerson University is Canada's leader in career-focused education, 75 graduate and undergraduate programs in the Faculties of Arts, Business, Communication & Design, Community Services, and Engineering, Architecture and Science. Founded in 1948, Ryerson has graduate and undergraduate enrolments of 24,000 students. With more than 64,000 registrations annually, The G.
